VSM Story from Flowtopia 2023: Telstra - Landing a VSM Vision

November 7, 2023

VSM adoption is gaining momentum as demonstrated by enterprise practitioners presenting how they use VSM practices and tools at Flowtopia 2023. This series will dive into first-hand VSM stories from our exceptional speakers from BECU, Deutsche Telekom, Netflix, Parchment, Shutterstock, Telstra, and Unum.

Evolving Our Ways of Working to Value Stream Ways of Working

Telstra's history dates back to the 1800s and is closely tied to the evolution of communication technologies in Australia. The company has transformed from a government-owned telco to a privatized and digitized agile company.

In 2019, Telstra embarked on its Agile at Scale Transformation Journey with the aim to become more agile and responsive to the rapidly changing technology and customer needs by introducing company-wide Agile methodologies.

Fast forward to 2023, Telstra continues to adapt and evolve our Ways of Working to Value Stream Ways of Working. We are very early on that journey and I would like to share my reflection and learning that I had from presenting the VSM vision to two groups of stakeholders.

Vision

The VSM Implementation Roadmap

Key to Landing Vision Part 1: Humanizing Vision

We often hear a lot about crafting a compelling vision, but presenting it effectively to resonate with your audience is another challenge. Susan’s talk aims to share her insights and learning on how to land a vision that resonates with your audience by drawing on her experiences when a vision didn’t land as expected.

The key to landing a vision that resonates with people starts by shifting how you “think” about the Vision Process - start by humanizing Vision.

From seeing it as beyond just a mechanical process to a relational process. A relational process that consists of many humans (including yourself) in the ecosystem.  With humans, we need to think about three pillars - the Head (how humans think), the Heart (how humans feel), and the Hand (how humans react and respond).

Humanising Vision

Key to Landing Vision Part 2: The Power of Balance and Invitation

Once we can see Vision as a relational process of Humans. We need to think about how we can find the right balance for:

  1. Helping your audience to think and inviting your audience to think for themselves
  2. Helping your audience to feel and inviting your audience to feel for themselves
  3. Managing others and managing yourself

Concluding remarks

Quote from the speaker

After the Flowtopia event, I left feeling excited by the different VSM possibilities
and inspired by the stories of different speakers.

The vision for the next step is to continuously learn from VSMC and other thought leadership and apply what's helpful and relevant to my own circumstances. I also aspire to share and extend this new knowledge and insights to my Ways of Working Agile community, both in Telstra and beyond.
