Consortium’s First Learning Initiative Focuses on the Management of Digital Value Streams
DENVER, September 27, 2021 - The Value Stream Management Consortium has released its first major learning product, the Value Stream Management Foundation course. The course, the first of its kind, is designed to help organizations learn how to harness the value stream management principles and practices that lead to higher organizational performance.
Key learning objectives for the course are:
“When we launched the consortium on March 3, 2021, we committed to helping the community learn together what value stream management means in the digital age,” said Helen Beal, chair of the Value Stream Management Consortium. “Value stream management’s history goes back decades, but it’s only now that we are really discovering how to apply the principles to digital value streams, which are inherently different from manufacturing. Combining these principles with what we have learned in DevOps and using the DevOps toolchains and recently available value stream management platforms is already making a difference to organizational performance as we discovered in our research earlier this year that we published as The State of Value Stream Management Report.”
About the Value Stream Management Foundation Course
The course describes the history and evolution of value stream management and provides practitioner-led advice on how to identify and map value streams; connecting DevOps toolchains; the value stream metrics to use in OKRs and KPIs; how to inspect and evolve value streams and how to organize around them. It builds on the implementation roadmap introduced in the State of Value Stream Management Report and includes public case stories from a diverse range of companies including Adidas, Bank of New Zealand, Capital One, DNB, Healthfirst, Nio, Northrop Grumman, and Schneider.
“Despite its recent adoption in the software world, value stream management has a long history across every type of industry over the last 100 years,” said Steve Pereira, Board Advisor for the Value Stream Management Consortium. “That’s a lot to learn from. My learning started 15 years ago, and this is the course I would have loved to take back then. There’s a massive shift beginning across every type of organization right now, and this course will prepare anyone who prefers to lead rather than catch up.”

The Value Stream Management Foundation Course is available for free, online to all VSMC members. VSMC partner, DevOps Institute, is managing the certification process and platform and also making the course available to its global network of Registered Education Partners.
